Spirits are experiencing a serious glass bottle shortage, and Jesse Fanning of his whiskey and tasting room near San Diego, California is in the midst of the crisis. Due to shipping backups, labor issues, and a trucker shortage, there is a significant shortage of glass bottles at present. According to Cynthia Fisher of West Coast Bottles in El Dorado Hills, California, there is a glass shortage; DeFife believes that the bottle recycling system in the United States and the construction of more recycling plants will help to alleviate the problem. Due to the glass bottle shortage, some popular varieties and sizes of bourbon and other whiskeys are only available in plastic bottles, while wine is not immune. Because of the glass shortage, these distillers are turning to plastic containers for their spirits, which appears to be a borrowing from soda bottlers. Because of the shortage, glass bottles are in short supply and there is a high demand for alternative packaging solutions for popular spirits.

In more recent years, we've gotten extra fancy and started experimenting with infusing various liquors and simple syrups. For my wedding last year, we made huge batches of homemade infused vodka and tequila for my signature cocktails. They were a huge hit - some of my friends were even taking straight-up shots of the jalapeño infused tequila! (Yes, it was a very fun wedding.)

In addition to majorly improving just about any cocktail, homemade infused liquors also make for a great DIY holiday gift. Any host/hostess, family member, friend or coworker will surely appreciate the originality and effort!

All you need to get started is a bottle of liquor, your flavorings of choice, and a clean glass jar with an airtight lid. Since most bottles of alcohol have small spouts, you'll have to infuse in a separate jar.

To strain your infusion, pour the liquor through a fine mesh sieve into a wide-mouth jar, measuring cup or glass bowl. If the infusion contains fruit with seeds/pulp (like strawberries), line the sieve with a cheesecloth to remove as much sediment as possible.

Discard the fruit/infusion ingredients. Clean the glass jar you used for the infusion and return the infused liquor to the jar. Seal and store in a dark, cool place. It will last indefinitely, but we're willing to bet you'll get through it pretty quickly!

For a larger gift, pair a bottle or two of your infused liquor with more cocktail-oriented gifts. Pair with your a few cocktail glasses, a cocktail shaker/other bar equipment, mixology cookbooks, unique ice cube trays or ingredients like bitters and shrubs.

Given the small serving size of vanilla extract used in your dishes, a large bottle of vanilla extract could last up to 3 years! VanillaPura uses glass bottles and air-tight resealable caps to make sure you get the longest shelf-life possible out of each bottle.

Glass bottles, on the other hand, have high resistance to leaching given their solid surface. The dealkalization process that bottles go through ensures a smooth, impermeable air-tight environment that is important when storing liquids in glass, particularly alcohol-based liquids.

In summary, we believe that glass is the best option for both the environmental and product quality reasons listed here. If you're an extract maker, we recommend using glass bottles. Of course, we follow this recommendation ourselves.

Hi,I infused Bourbon with fresh figs, a bit of honey and orange. I removed the orange after a few days because I only wanted a hint of the citrus. I removed the figs after three weeks and pureed them. I then strained the bourbon several times, filled sterilized bottles with the liquor and corked them. I sealed the corks with wax and placed the bottles in a cool dark place for four weeks. I took the bottles out to use and there is what appears to be cloudy sediment floating in the bottles. Could there be mold? What can I do? How would that have happened?
